MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A historic submarine is getting much-needed maintenance in Sturgeon Bay.
The USS Cobia left its dock at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum in Manitowoc on Sunday morning.
It was originally scheduled to move on Thursday, but was rescheduled due to weather delays.
The WWII-era submarine was towed 55 nautical miles north to Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay.
Over the course of about six weeks, it will be cleaned, inspected, replated, and repainted in dry dock.
“All the dirt, grime, and moss that sits on it gets repaired and scrubbed so theres no damage to it and it can sit here for another 30 years before it needs to be back in dry dock again,” said Jenny Matte as she watched the Cobia’s departure.
She said she was also there the last time the Cobia left the museum; which was 29 years ago in 1996.
