GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Labor Day marks the end of summer in Northeast Wisconsin, and the start to a brand new school year for thousands of kids and teens.
The prospect of heading back to school is exciting for so many students, but it’s also a bittersweet end to months of fun and relaxation.
“I really like school, so I’m kind of excited, but like, the summer, I really wanted the summer to stay longer,” says soon-to-be fifth grader Kyrie Owens.
As thousands of students head to bed on Labor Day, some may be feeling first-day jitters or experiencing nerves ahead of a new year and new adventures, with the potential for unfamiliar experiences.
At the Green Bay Area Public School District’s welcome back bash last week, some students shared their advice for others ahead of the first day.
“When I first went to school, I had no idea what I was doing, but my mom told me put on a brave face, you need to be confident you need to be a leader, don’t be a follower, be a leader, so that’s what I want to tell everybody,” says Unity Davis, a soon-to-be sixth grader.
“I’d give them advice about staying calm and taking deep breaths and not giving disrespect for any teachers because it’ll go on your record and stick with you forever,” adds Aleiah Garcia, who is going into fifth grade this year.
“Don’t be nervous, make lots of friends and have a lot of fun,” says incoming fifth-grade student Angel Marie Weihbreiact.
“Don’t sweat it, just have fun,” fifth grader Anjaleah Stackhouse simply added.
“If you’re getting bullied, either you can tell a trusted adult or you can handle it yourself, don’t use your hands or anything, just speak to them in a calm manner,” says soon-to-be seventh grader Mila Kaercher. “Just make the best of your year.”
“I’d say don’t be that scared because once you stay longer into it, then you won’t be that scared,” adds Owens.
“When you are smiling, you can light up a whole entire room. You walk in there with confidence, you can put a smile on people’s faces. All you gotta do is look at them and smile,” Davis adds.
And don’t forget…
“It’s going to be fun!” says sixth grader Chrisalynn Sangraw.
