SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Shawano School District is kicking off the second phase of a multi-building improvement project.
Community members, district representatives and students took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday to celebrate the start of upgrades to Shawano Community High School.
“Couldn’t be more excited to start these projects right now,” said Superintendent Kurt Krizan. “This is the beginning of the next phase of a great project that’s really going to impact our community.”
In May, the district began work at Olga Brener Intermediate School, Hillcrest Primary School and Shawano Community Middle School.
These projects are the result of a $51.2 million capital referendum passed by voters in the November general election. A $54.5 million referendum was first proposed on the April 2024 ballot, but it was narrowly defeated.
“The first time we went to referendum and it didn’t pass by 75 votes, we could have come back with the same plan. But we took the time to really listen to the community and address the needs of the community and determine what the priorities of the community were, and the plan that we put together with the help from Hoffman Planning and Design really reflects the needs and the desires of our community moving forward,” Krizan said.
Teachers and students got to provide input on the referendum projects at Shawano Community High School. Altogether, the construction will provide much-needed maintenance and feature various enhancements, including:
- Improvements to classrooms, fine arts/auditorium and other learning spaces
- Expansion of fitness and related areas
- Relocation of the district office to Olga Brener Intermediate School
- Significant upgrade to the athletics field
- Increased building and campus security for students, teachers, and staff
- Added infrastructure to classrooms to support the latest technology
- Updated student life and common areas
- Added learning space for technical and trade education and family and consumer science
Tuesday’s event was emceed by two high school students. Members of the Shawano Community High School Choir performed the National Anthem.
