APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Alic Riedel was sentenced Monday to two years in prison for striking a bicyclist with his vehicle, then leaving the scene. The victim suffered life-altering injuries.
Riedel, 29, previously pleaded no contest to one count of hit and run causing great bodily harm for the July 24, 2024 incident in the 400 block of N. Meade Street.
He was also placed on extended supervision four years by Judge Yadira Rein. Riedel must speak to youth groups about the crash while on supervision, and write a letter to the victim’s family. Restitution of $18,837.74 was ordered.
The victim’s father described injuries and weeks spent in the hospital, noting his son is now cognitively disabled due to the brain injuries.
Before the sentence was issued, Reidel’s attorney read a statement on his behalf. In it, he apologized for the pain he caused the victim and his family. He pledged to continue working so he could financially assist the victim.
Riedel told police he thought someone threw a rock at his vehicle, according to the criminal complaint.
“Alic said all he knew was his windshield got hit. He confirmed that he didn’t stop to confirm what he hit,” the complaint states. “Alic did not remember seeing someone on a bike and said he did not see the reflective light of the bicycle.”
