WRIGHTSTOWN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wrightstown Community School District has another new leader at the helm — their third in seven months.
On Wednesday, the district announced James Smasal has been appointed interim superintendent for the 2025-26 school year.
Smasal will succeed Ronald Saari, who was named interim district administrator in mid-January but resigned effective Aug. 2.
The school board had discussed with Saari the possibility of serving as superintendent for the upcoming school year. Officials then “decided to pursue a new direction in District leadership” following a “recent change in School Board membership.”
Saari replaced Andy Space. He retired at the end of the first semester of the 2024-25 school year amid allegations concerning superintendent contractual matters, school purchases, open meetings law issues, legal counsel issues, board/staff relations and insubordination, which were all under review by an outside law firm.
According to a news release, Smasal was chosen as interim superintendent through a “rigorous” selection process that began with a pool of 10 candidates.
“Mr. Smasal brings to WCSD a strong background in district operations, a proven record of leadership, and a contagious enthusiasm for public education,” the release states. “Known for his passion for students, staff, and the community, Mr. Smasal is a vibrant leader who approaches his work with heart, humor, and energy.”
