(WTAQ-WLUK) — Counties along Lake Michigan are under an air quality advisory Thursday — but not for wildfire smoke.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the air quality index for ozone is expected to reach the unhealthy for sensitive groups level — and could become unhealthy for all.
In our area, the advisory covers Door, Kewaunee and Manitowoc counties. It extends down to the Illinois border.
Sensitive groups are urged to make outdoor activities shorter and less intense. Take more breaks and watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath.
Those with asthma are advised to follow their asthma action plan and keep quick-relief medicine handy.
The advisory ends at 11 p.m. Thursday.
Ozone in the air results from reactions among different pollutants, spurred on by sunlight and heat. The pollutants tend to blow over the lake from urban areas to the south.
