GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — For the first time, Wisconsin’s live music scene will include the Door County Jazz Festival.
The new event takes place August 4-9 throughout the Door County Peninsula. Organizers say the festival is timed to the full moon in August with the theme of “Celebrating Centennial Stars Under the Sturgeon Moon.”
Event founder Staci Griesbach says it mostly coincides with the county’s “Concerts in the Park” series. Festival goers are encouraged to bring their picnic chairs and blankets to the various venues.
“Door County offers the perfect setting for a Jazz Festival, and the community’s embrace reflects the dedication here to supporting the arts and culture throughout the peninsula,” said Griesbach. “As one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations, my hope is to create an experience where Jazz fans from around the world can come and enjoy world-class music in attractive venues, all nestled in the local charm of this special corner of Wisconsin.”
Griesbach, a jazz vocalist, is one of the participating performers. The Door County Jazz Festival also features performances from the award winning Precarious Towers and the Milwaukee Jazz Institute Quintet, pianist Johannes Wallman, and Mitchell Shiner’s Latin Vibes.
Governor Tony Evers officially proclaimed August as “Wisconsin Jazz Festival Month.” This month also sees the Fresh Coast Jazz Festival in Milwaukee on August 21-23, the Oshkosh Jazz Festival on August 23, the Fox Jazz Fest in Menasha August 30-31 and Riverfront Jazz Fest in Stevens Point on August 30-31.
