Oconto County Sign (PC: Fox 11 Online)
(WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Department of Health Services says it has confirmed the first known cases of measles in Wisconsin in 2025.
In a release Saturday, DHS says there is no known public exposure identified and that the overall risk to the public is low.
Nine cases of measles were identified in Oconto County.
“One case was confirmed through testing at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, with eight additional cases confirmed based on exposure and symptoms,” the release states.
“All of the cases were exposed to a common source during out-of-state travel.”
DHS says no more information will be released due to privacy, and the department will continue to work with Oconto County if others need to be notified about potential exposures.
“Measles is a highly contagious disease that can be spread from person to person through the air and can stay in the air for two hours after a sick person coughs or sneezes. It is so contagious that if one person gets it, up to 90% of the people around them may also become infected if they are not vaccinated,” the release says.
