SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new landmark is shining a spotlight on more than two dozen historically-significant sites throughout the village of Suamico.
On Thursday, the village unveiled their “Historical Map” which commemorates 28 spots important to Suamico’s rich past.
Officials describe the map as a window into the stories that shaped the community.
“The Historic Preservation Committee endeavored to create a sign that would represent the entire history of the village,” said Mike Romes, a trustee for the village of Suamico. “From as far back as we could go, like from the very beginning.”
Located in downtown Suamico, it’s a permanent installation for all to enjoy that features locations, photographs and information about each site’s impact on the village.
“You have to be aware of your history. There needs to be a tether to history,” Romes said. “The idea is to kind of draw a connection between the history of who we are and understand, from there, where we can be.”
The project, spearheaded by the Historic Preservation Commission, has been three years in the making. It received support from the Howard-Suamico Historical Society, Village Board and village staff, along with site owners and community members.
