(WTAQ-WLUK) — With Green Bay and Ashwaubenon schools closed for the NFL Draft, kids and families are eager to get to Bay Beach Amusement Park. It typically doesn’t open until mid-to-late May.
“I’m just here to have fun with my friends and my family,” said Julia Larsen, a sixth grader at Edison Middle School.
“I’m coming tomorrow, again,” adds Liza Estupinian, an Eisenhower Elementary student.
“I’ve been waiting for this because I love Bay Beach,” says Edison sixth grader Kylie Voelker.
“Probably just the experience, having it be in Green Bay,” says Larsen about what she’s most excited for about the NFL Draft.
While some students and families may take part in the draft activities, not everyone will be.
“If you’re looking to escape the draft zoo, come visit our zoo!” says Angela Kawski, the education program coordinator at the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park in Suamico.
The park is hosting “Draft Days” kids camps at the zoo and adventure park Thursday and Friday. Thursday’s “Creature Camp” was booked full, and Friday’s “Zip Camp” is booked full Friday.
“[At Creature Camp] they spend time with us in the zoo, meeting animals. We go behind the scenes, we feed the giraffes, we do all kinds of fun stuff, games, crafts,” Kawski adds.
For those who are sticking close to town but aren’t fully committed to the hustle and bustle inside the draft footprint, there are options — including one just across the street.
“We wanted to make sure people got a good taste of the real Green Bay, so Military Avenue, some of our businesses are coming down here to the entrance of the draft, and we’re going to have family-friendly activities, food trucks and some of our restaurants are going to set up food tents too,” says Leah Weycker, the executive director of the Military Avenue Business District.
Weycker says there will be yard games and a mini farmer’s market at the event, too. A full list of what to expect Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Military Avenue Tailgate Party can be found by clicking here.
