GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay School Board approved offers to purchase three former school sites at a special meeting Monday.
As the district copes with shrinking enrollment, it has closed several schools. It is now in the process of selling several of those properties.
“I want to acknowledge that the sale of a treasured school, where childhood memories and friends were made, is difficult,” said Board of Education President Laura McCoy. “It has been a multi-year process to arrive at this point, beginning in 2021 with our facility master planning. We have worked closely with our municipal partners while developing a plan to address the schools that have, or are, designated to close. For the buildings that were placed on the market, we are grateful that there were interested parties to ensure the properties remain viable assets in our community.”
According to the agenda documents, Gary Fairchild offered to purchase the former Keller Elementary School, 1808 Bond St., for $800,000. The district would remove the playground equipment, and the site could not be used an “educational facility.” The listed asking price was $900,000.
The former Froebel Early Learning Center, 3542 Finger Road, would be sold to MJMB Properties for $435,000. Again, there would be a prohibition for using it as a school facility. The listed asking price was $475,000.
The former Wequiock Elementary School, 3994 Wequiock Road, would be sold to David Charles for $500,000. Again, there would be a prohibition for using it as a school facility. The listed asking price was $500,000.
Tank Elementary also closed in spring 2024. Langlade, MacArthur, and Elmore Elementary are slated for closure. Some of those properties were involved in a land swap between the district and the City of Green Bay.
Revenue from the sale of the buildings will be used towards the district’s projected $10-12 million budget deficit for the 2025-26 school year. The sale of the buildings eliminates future costs for the District, including insurance and maintenance.
