(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) CLEVELAND, Ohio –In a pair of pitching duels, the Green Bay softball team came up short, falling to the Cleveland State Vikings 2-1 in game one and 3-0 in game two. CSU won game one in nine innings.
GAME 1 | Cleveland State 2, Green Bay 1
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first in the third inning. With Grace Kahr on third, Sidney LaMotte doubled to left to give GB a 1-0 lead.
Phoenix starter Paeton Kringel pitched a complete game and held that 1-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh when CSU’s Brooke Albaugh singled home a run to force extra innings. Albaugh made an impact at the plate again in the ninth, singling home the Vikings’ second run to win the game.
Kringel had a great outing for the Phoenix, going 8.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on seven hits, allowing three walks and striking out four. Melissa Holzopfel pitched again for Cleveland State, going all nine innings while allowing seven hits and no earned runs.

GAME 2 | Cleveland State 3, Green Bay 0
Coming off of the game one win, the Vikings kept the momentum going early in game two, scoring the game’s opening run in the bottom of the first. CSU added insurance runs in both the fifth and sixth innings and took the game by a score of 3-0.
The GB offense never got going in game two, finishing with four hits and never having a runner advance past second base.
Ava Schill got the ball to start for Green Bay and took the loss. She went five innings, allowing eight hits and two earned runs. Megan Weiss was a bright spot for the Phoenix, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one shutout inning, allowing one hit, with no walks and one strikeout. Katie McDonald pitched a complete game for CSU and got the win.
Kendal Herschbach got on base twice to lead the Phoenix offense, going 1-for-2 with a walk. LaMotte went 1-for-3 with a double.

COMING UP
The Phoenix will have a quick turnaround to take on St. Thomas on the road in a Tuesday doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. Following, the Phoenix will host Youngstown State in a three-game series. The series will start with a single game on Friday, April 18 at 2 p.m. and a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. CT on Saturday, April 19.
