GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The statewide scorecard from Tuesday’s election shows two wins for liberals and one for conservatives.
Wisconsin Democrats, however, are claiming victory.
“Wisconsin voters delivered a landslide for Susan Crawford, over Brad Schimel, Donald Trump and Elon Musk and sent an unmistakable message – Democrats are back,” said WISDems Chair Ben Wikler.
Republicans say not so fast.
According to Chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, Brian Schimming, “For me, the democratic base in this state was pretty jacked up about the loss in November. So, I’m not surprised they had some energy on that side.”
The state and its voters, who sent Donald Trump to the White House back the fall, are now electing democratic backed candidates for state offices.
“Wisconsin is the purpliest of purple states,” said Lawrence University professor Jerald Podair.
While it may not make sense to outsiders, Podair says it’s what Wisconsin voters do time and again.
He said, “I think the democrats have some momentum here. I think this victory is going to give them hope for the future, however, it always comes with a caveat. Democratic voters are much more likely to vote in special elections like these.”
The democratic victory, specifically Susan Crawford’s win in the State Supreme Court race, will most likely have implications on things like labor laws, election laws, election maps and also the issue of abortion. A win for democrats.
But voters also approved the voter ID referendum, which was strongly supported by republicans.
While it may seem like democrats are on a roll, that started in the fall when several state legislative seats turned from red to blue — a movement that picked up more steam this week with Susan Crawford’s victory.
None of it, according to Podair, is a reflection of which way Wisconsin is leaning or will lean in the future.
He added, “It’s important but is it a predicter of what’s going to happen in the future? I’ve followed politics long enough never to say that.”
