(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Lawrence University baseball team opened Midwest Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader split at Monmouth College.
Lawrence won the opener at Glasgow Field 13-2 in seven innings, and Monmouth took the second game 9-1.
In the first game, the Vikings pounded out 12 hits, including a pair of homers, and rose another fine pitching performance from Elden Santana.
CJ Filipek went 2-for-5 with a homer and five runs batted in for the Vikings (7-9, 1-1 MWC). Lawrence’s Ben Gutowski was 2-for-5 with a homer and a double and scored a pair of runs.
Rookie Shane Santaga went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs, and lead-off hitter Tate Hartlaub was 3-for-4, scored three times and drove in a run for Lawrence. Taylor Freeman was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and Zach Leslie drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings.
Santana went 5.1 innings to pick up the victory. He allowed two runs on five hits, struck out eight and walked six. Ethan Zaayenga allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings and took the loss for the Scots (5-13, 1-3).
Lawrence scored single runs in each of the first four innings and led 4-2 heading to the fifth. Gutowski hit a solo homer in the second.
The Vikings broke the game open in the sixth with six runs. Leslie drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run in the frame, and Santaga followed with a two-run single. Filipek then delivered the biggest blow of the game with a three-run homer to give the Vikings a 10-2 lead.
Lawrence tacked on three runs in the seventh with Filipek picking up a two-run single in the inning.
In the nightcap, Monmouth used a five-run third inning to pull out to a 7-0 lead. The Scots finished with 11 hits, and three Monmouth pitchers limited Lawrence to six hits. Edan Perez went 2-for-3 with a double for the Vikings.
Richie LaCien made the start for Lawrence and gave up six runs on five hits over 2.1 innings to take the loss. He struck out two and walked five.
The teams wrap up the three-game series with one game on Sunday.
