(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Lawrence University baseball team couldn’t hold on to an early lead Sunday and dropped a 10-6 Midwest Conference decision to Monmouth College at Glasgow Field.
The win in the rubber game gave Monmouth the series victory. The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Lawrence (7-10, 1-2 MWC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but Monmouth countered with a pair of runs. Lawrence scored two more times in the top of the second for a 6-2 advantage before the Scots chipped away at the lead.
Monmouth trailed 6-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh before the Scots scored five times to take the lead for good.
Taylor Freeman went 2-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run, and Zach Leslie and Ben Gutowski both had a hit and both drove in two runs for the Vikings.
Connor Robertson made the start for the Vikings and allowed four runs, two earned, on eight hits over 3.2 innings. He struck out six and walked two. Liam Shackleton came on in the seventh and was charged with all five runs in the seventh to take the loss.
Owen Wolfe pitched two perfect innings in relief to pick up the win for the Scots (6-13, 2-3).
