GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Port of Green Bay announced the winner of its first ship contest.
Each year the port asks residents to guess when the first ship of the season arrives.
The 2025 shipping season officially kicked off with the arrival of the Innovation with Tug Samuel De Champlain. She arrived on Wednesday, March 12, at 1:49 p.m. carrying a shipment of cement.
“This year’s shipping season is now underway just two days later than last year’s start,” exclaimed Dean Haen, Director of the Port of Green Bay. “This makes for an early start and has us looking forward to what our new season will bring.”
The winner of the contest is Anne LaCour of Pembine. She predicted that the first ship would arrive at 2:13 p.m. on March 12, with the actual arrival occurring a mere 24 minutes earlier.
LaCour will receive a one-night stay at the historic Hotel Northland, a Port of Green Bay swag bag, a 200th Anniversary Brown County Monopoly Game, six admission tickets to the National Railroad Museum and a gift certificate from Voyageurs Sourdough Bakehouse.
For those interested in ship watching, the Fox River Trail and Green Bay Metro Boat launch, along with other areas down the Lower Fox River, often offer a great view of incoming vessels. Port security requirements do not allow public access to any port property. Learn more about ship arrivals here.
