WINNECONNE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A school in Winneconne was briefly placed under a soft lockdown Tuesday while police executed a search warrant at a nearby residence.
According to a news release, it began when the Winneconne Police Department received reports from concerned neighbors about “suspicious activity” taking place at a home in the 400 block of S. 2nd Avenue. An investigation into the reports was initiated and a search warrant for the residence was approved over the weekend.
Because the occupant(s) of the residence were known to be in possession of firearms, and due to the home’s close proximity to Winneconne Elementary School, officials agreed a soft lockdown of the school “would be enacted for overall safety precautions” while the search warrant was conducted.
The lockdown was immediately lifted once the residence was secured and the individuals inside the home were detained.
50 used syringes were located during the search warrant, as well as a small amount of methamphetamine. Firearms were also located, but not directly in the possession of the subject(s).
Police arrested a 44-year-old Winneconne man currently on probation for a prior meth-related conviction. Charges of possession of methamphetamine (repeater), possession of THC (2nd+ offense) and possession of drug paraphernalia are being forwarded to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office.
Winneconne police were assisted by the Lake Winnebago Area Metropolitan Enforcement Group’s drug unit in executing the search warrant.
Authorities thanked the neighbors who initially reported the suspicious activity at the home and reminded all residents, “As the saying goes, if you see something, say something.”
