KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — There’s a reminder from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for those venturing out on the ice.
DNR Conservation Warden Marcus Medina says permanent ice shanties need to be removed from some area waterways in the coming weeks.
“The ice starts deteriorating. You get those pockets of really poor ice, and you get really poor shoreline ice. That causes a lot of challenges and safety concerns for individuals trying to remove their shanties,” said Medina.
Medina says permanent shanties on Lake Michigan, Green Bay, Lake Superior and inland waters north of Highway 64 need to be removed by March 16.
“When you’re removing your shanty, be safe. If there is an instance where ice conditions may not be favorable, don’t risk your safety to remove your shanty. Give us a call and we’ll work with you to get it removed,” he said.
People are still allowed to ice fish. Portable shanties must be used and removed each day.
The fine for missing the shack deadline starts at about $200.
