(WTAQ-WLUK) — The eighth day of sturgeon spearing season brought lower numbers of sturgeon speared with a total of just 36 throughout the Lake Winnebago system, likely due to the weather, according to the Wisconsin DNR.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports that of the 24 speared on Lake Winnebago, 4 were juvenile females, 8 were adult females, and 12 were males.
This year’s harvest cap is 280 for juvenile females, 717 for adult females, and 1,002 for males on Lake Winnebago. The number of sturgeon remaining until the 90% trigger are 201, 503, and 774 respectively.
Of the 12 sturgeon speared on the Upriver Lakes on Saturday, 2 were juvenile females, 2 were adult females, and 8 were males.
This year’s harvest cap is 70 for juvenile females, 80 for adult females, and 250 for males on Upriver Lakes. The number of sturgeon remaining until the 90% trigger are 28, 32, and 39 respectively.
“Despite being a Saturday, this is the lowest harvest day on the Upriver Lakes this season,” the DNR says.
The DNR says Saturday’s largest sturgeon was a 117.9-pound, 71-inch sturgeon speared on Lake Winnebago. “This brings the total number of fish harvested over 100 pounds to 35 for the season.”
“Please note, due to water clarity, the Pipe registration station will still be closed [Sunday]. For those registering fish in that area, the Quinney registration station is the next closest station,” the DNR says.
