GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The city of Green Bay will be getting three new buses, courtesy of fines paid by Volkswagen for cheating on emissions tests.
The Wisconsin Department of Administration announced $11.8 million in grants to four cities on Monday.
Of that, Green Bay is receiving about $3.9 million for the new buses and to scrap older models. The city previously replaced four buses in 2020 using Volkswagen fines.
Valley Transit has also used the money to replace buses in the past.
Volkswagen agreed to pay the federal government $2.9 billion after violating the Clean Air Act between 2009 and 2016. The company sold diesel engines that had software showing inaccurate nitrogen oxide emissions. Wisconsin’s portion of the settlement was $67 million.
The latest round of grants included $6.4 million for 10 buses in Wausau, $921,500 to replace a bus in Beloit and $581,500 to replace a bus in Janesville.
