MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The sale of the former Garfield Elementary School appears to be getting closer to finalization.
The Marinette School District has been trying to sell the former school. A tentative deal with a developer, who would turn the site into housing, had been reached but not finalized.
The district has rejected overtures from the St. Thomas Aquinas Academy to purchase the building to continue use as a school, saying it would end up losing money in the long run if students left the district to attend the new private school.
The Marinette School Board met in closed session Wednesday to discuss it.
“The board took action in open session and approved the Board of Education to authorize the Superintendent to execute any necessary documents to set a closing date no later than February 10, 2025, and to execute any necessary documents for the closing,” Supt. Corry Lambie said.
The district closed Garfield Elementary School, 1615 Carney Blvd, at the end of the 2021-22 school year.
