GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Short-term rentals are likely to play a big role for visitors coming to Green Bay for the 2025 NFL Draft April 24-26.
With hotels expected to be booked full, officials with the City of Green Bay and the Village of Ashwaubenon say short-term rentals, like Airbnb and VRBO, will be a tremendous help for NFL fans looking to experience the draft at historic Lambeau Field.
In Green Bay, there are currently about 450 short-term rentals. Last year, there were only about 250.
Mike Boutott, Neighborhood Compliance Inspector with the Short-Term Rental Program in the City of Green Bay, says its hard to predict how many short-term rentals they’ll need for the draft but…
“We have roughly 200 [short-term rentals] for normal Packer weekends and that seems to be plenty,” said Boutott. “But if we triple the amount of people coming in for the draft, maybe 600 would cover it.”
Currently, its estimated that about 250,000 visitors will make their way to Green Bay for the draft. According to the City of Green Bay, each Packers home game draws over 80,000 people.
Boutott went on to say that within the past two weeks, he approved 28 additional short-term rentals and that number is growing rapidly.
Other nearby municipalities are also experiencing an increased interest in listing their property as a short-term rental, but certain licenses and inspections are required, and may differ slightly based on where you live.
In Brown County, you need the proper licensure and will have to undergo health and safety inspections. Depending on how long your property is available to rent, you may also need a state license. You’ll also need the proper approval from your municipality, and the right insurance.
“We’re looking at a lot of safety things, making sure nothing is falling apart,” said William Engels, Assistant Zoning Administrator and Code Enforcement Officer for the Village of Ashwaubenon. “We’re also looking at things like making sure proper smoke detectors are installed; and just making sure its a safe place for people to stay and to rent.”
Officials say it’s also a good idea to do a background check of each person staying on your property.
Both Boutott and Engels say the process of listing your home as a short-term rental for the draft is the same as it would be in any other scenario.
Most short-term rentals on Airbnb and VRBO in the Green Bay area are thousands of dollars per night during the week of the draft; and offer a different variety of number of rooms, bathrooms, amenities, and more.
