GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A temperature record set 111 years ago came tumbling down Tuesday.
Green Bay has already reached 48 degrees, with a chance to warm up even more before the day is done. We beat out the prior record-high of 46 degrees set in 1914.
Tuesday may not have felt as warm as it has been, due to strong winds gusting up to 52 miles per hour in some parts of Northeast Wisconsin.
Even more unusually warm weather is expected Thursday, as parts of the region could see a high of 50. The normal high for this time of year is 25 degrees.
This record warmth has experts warning of potentially unsafe ice conditions.
The Otter Street Fishing Club says it plans to pull its truck bridges on Lake Winnebago by 1 p.m. Wednesday in an effort to save the landing. ATV/UTV bridges will remain in place, but will not be maintained, as the club does not want anyone on the landing.
“We plan to put the bridges back out Friday in anticipation of a busy weekend with the OSFC fisheree Saturday. We ask that folks DON’T park on the ice. In essence the launch off of Merritt will be closed until Friday,” a Facebook post from Otter Street Fishing Club reads.
Officials remind everyone that no ice is ever 100% safe, and ice rescues have been commonplace this winter season.
