(LEARFIELD/PACKERS/WNFL) – In his first season as defensive coordinator for the Packers, Jeff Hafley put together a unit ranked fourth in the NFL.
That defense was ranked 24th the previous season.
The New York Jets have asked permission to interview him for the team’s head coaching position.
Previously, the Jets interviewed Packers executive vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan for general manager.
Sports Illustrated reports Hafley will be the 11th candidate New York has interviewed for the position.
Add veteran leadership: There was some question after the brief playoff appearance that the Packers with their young roster could use an additional veteran voice or 2 in the lockerroom for leadership purposes.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur in his season-ending news conference said that he doesn’t think the locker room needs more veteran players necessarily.
LaFleur talked about developing leadership with the young guys in the locker room.
Packers sign defensive lineman: The Green Bay Packers have signed DL Leonard Payne to a reserve/future contract. General Manager Brian Gutekunst announced the transaction Wednesday.
Payne (6-3, 301), a first-year player out of the University of Colorado, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Miami Dolphins on May 10, 2024, but was released after training camp. He spent four years at Fresno State (2019-22) before finishing his college career at Colorado (2023). Overall, Payne played in 41 games with 17 starts and recorded 45 tackles (23 solo), 7.5 sacks, 12.5 tackles for a loss, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, a pass defensed and two blocked field goals.
