NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It was all smiles for a family in the Fox Valley on Thursday as they were handed the keys to their new home.
A partnership between the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity and ThedaCare made the project possible.
Yer was born in Laos and has been living with disabilities since she was young. After fleeing her country during the Vietnam War, she spent 14 years in a refugee camp. She was a single mother with four small children when she immigrated to the United States.
When Yer applied for a Fox Cities Habitat housing opportunity, she was living with her three adult sons, daughter-in-law and six grandchildren. 11 people under one roof meant space was tight and overcrowded.
Fighting back tears, Yer’s son said during the dedication ceremony, “I’m very happy that we finally got a place to call home, that my mom finally got a place to call home.”
ThedaCare team members volunteered throughout the months-long project, serving as build crew members, site hosts and meal providers. It’s part of ThedaCare’s “Inspired to Fight for Healthy Housing” initiative.
“This is an opportunity for a family to start a new future in a place that many of you helped to make possible through your generous support — whether it’s financial support or helping to swing a hammer,” said John Weyenberg, president and CEO of the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity. “Whatever it might be, it takes all of us to make projects like this happen and we’re grateful for that.”
