(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) – APPLETON, Wis. — A late scoring run proved to be the difference Wednesday as the Lawrence University men’s basketball team fell 70-55 to Monmouth College in a Midwest Conference game at Alexander Gymnasium.
Monmouth put together a 12-3 scoring run to grab a double-digit lead with three minutes left and held on to the advantage from that point.
Landon Key led Lawrence (4-10, 2-3 MWC) with 17 points as she went 7-for-11 from the field. Key added three rebounds and a pair of steals. Casey Schoenecker went 4-for-6 from the floor on his way to 11 points for the Vikings.
Zay Brown paced Monmouth (9-4, 3-1) with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Scots jumped on Lawrence early and led 12-3 to start the contest. Lawrence was still down nine when the Vikings went on an 11-0 run. Key scored six points during the run, and Caleb Nash added a 3-pointer as the Vikings took a 24-22 lead. Lawrence led 29-28 at the half.
Schoenecker scored seven consecutive points and Nathan Valentine added a layup to start the second half as the Vikings raced out to a 38-28 lead. Monmouth countered with an 11-2 run to trim the lead to 40-39.
Lawrence trailed 49-47 after Key hit a 3-pointer with 7:15 left, but Monmouth went on the decisive scoring run to grab a 61-50 advantage with 3:03 left. Lawrence didn’t get closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Women’s basketball
Lawrence 69, Monmouth 37
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s basketball team turned up the heat defensively on Wednesday en route to a 69-37 Midwest Conference victory over Monmouth College at Alexander Gymnasium.
Lawrence held Monmouth to 28 percent shooting for the game and to a season-low point total for the season. It also marked the second time this season Lawrence held an opponent to less than 40 points. The Vikings forced 19 Monmouth turnovers, and Charlotte Brennan led the way for Lawrence with three steals.
Sophie Morey paced the Vikings with 14 points and pulled down six rebounds. Caroline Sharpe added 11 points for Lawrence as she went 4-for-5 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Josie Chose came off the bench for the Vikings to score 11 points, and she added seven rebounds and three blocks. Maggie Culver pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Vikings (10-4, 4-1 MWC).
Lawrence pulled away from the Scots in the second quarter with a burst to end the first half. Chose scored four points as part of a 12-2 scoring run over the final six minutes of the second quarter to grab a 33-20 lead at the break.
The Vikings opened the second half on a 14-1 scoring run and grabbed a 47-21 lead on Kate Adams’ fastbreak layup with 5:26 left in the third quarter. Monmouth trimmed the lead to 47-29 after three periods, but the Vikings scored the first 12 points of the fourth to seal the victory.
The Vikings led by as many as 32 points in the fourth quarter.
Kynlee Stearns led Monmouth (4-9, 1-3) with 12 points.
