NEENAH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A driver died after crashing into a tree in Neenah over the weekend and a child suspected of being in the vehicle at the time of the crash was later found in a smoke-filled apartment.
It all started just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday when officers were dispatched to the 800 block of South Park for a report of a crash.
Several people reported an occupied vehicle was on fire with smoke and flames visible.
When crews arrived on scene, they saw the vehicle’s engine compartment and dashboard were on fire with the driver’s door slightly ajar.
An unconscious male was removed from the vehicle with traumatic injuries. He was transported to the hospital and later pronounced deceased.
During the initial investigation, it was believed that a one-year-old child was inside the vehicle.
It was later determined that the child might be in the decedent’s apartment and officers forced entry into a Cecil Street residence, where they found the baby in the smoke-filled apartment.
The baby did not require medical attention and was released to a family member.
Officials did not say what caused the smoke inside the apartment or the driver and child’s relationship.
The incident remains under investigation.
