LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team rallied late in regulation Saturday to tie it, but Lakeland University hung on for a 102-98 nonconference overtime victory at Alexander Gymnasium.
Nathan Valentine poured in a career-high 32 points for the Vikings as he went 11-for-17 from the floor, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range. Valentine added six rebounds and four assists.
Casey Schoenecker added 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds for the Vikings. Hogan Demovsky and Landon Key had 15 points apiece for Lawrence (4-9). Demovsky was 5-for-6 from the field, including 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, and Key picked up a career-high nine assists.
Nicholas Gouriotis rounded out Lawrence’s starting five with 13 points and six rebounds.
Cliff McCray led Lakeland (3-9) with 22 points.
Lawrence shot 53.6 percent for the game, including 44.8 percent on 3-pointers, but Lakeland shot 56.9 percent from the field.
The teams traded the lead before Lakeland eased out to a 67-58 lead with 12:47 left. Lawrence chipped away at the lead and Key’s 3-pointer cut the margin to 71-70 with 7:34 remaining.
The Muskies pushed the advantage back to 81-75 before Valentine drained a 3-pointer and Schoenecker followed with a layup to cut the margin to 81-80. After a McCray basket, Gouriotis buried a 3-pointer to tie the game at 83-83.
Lakeland grabbed the lead back on Asanjai Hunter’s layup, but Gouriotis tied it at 85-85 with a layup of his own. The teams traded missed shots in the final minute and the game headed to overtime.
Schoenecker got the first basket of the overtime, but Lakeland hit four of its first five shots to take a 94-91 lead. Lakeland expanded the lead to 99-93 before Valentine hit a pair of free throws and scored on a layup off a Key steal to cut the lead to 99-97 with 10 seconds left.
The Muskies then made three of the final four free throws to seal the victory.
Lawrence jumps back into Midwest Conference play when the Vikings host Monmouth College on Wednesday.
Women’s basketball
Lawrence 80, Marian75
FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Maggie Culver scored five of her 23 points in overtime Saturday to lead the Lawrence University women’s basketball team to an 80-75 nonconference win over Marian University at Sadoff Gymnasium.
Culver went 11-for-19 from the floor and made it a double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds along with picking up a game-high five steals.
Mallory Meyer added 17 points, five rebounds and two assists for Lawrence (9-4), and Charlotte Brennan picked up 12 points, a game-high six assists, three rebounds and two assists. Sophie Morey also was in double figures for the Vikings with 10 points to go with five rebounds.
Lyla Bartol poured in a game-high 27 points for Marian (3-8).
The teams swapped the lead in the opening half, but Lawrence led by as many as nine at 39-30 in the third quarter. The Sabres stormed back to take the lead in the third, but Lawrence led 51-50 heading to the fourth.
It was tight in the fourth, and Culver gave Lawrence a 68-67 lead with 56 seconds left in regulation. The Sabres tied it on a McKayla Goebel free throw and then took a 71-68 lead on a pair of free throws by Lexi Brakebush with nine seconds left.
Kate Adams answered for the Vikings with a 3-pointer to tie it at 71-71 with six seconds remaining. The Sabres missed a pair of shots in the waning seconds that would have given them the win.
Culver got things started for the Vikings in overtime with a jumper for a 73-71 advantage. A pair of Adams free throws followed by a Culver jumper gave Lawrence a 77-72 edge with just 47 seconds left. Following a Marian miss, the Sabres were forced to foul.
Lawrence went just 3-for-6 from the foul line in the final 33 seconds but that was enough to secure the win. The Lawrence defense was the key in overtime as the Vikings forced five turnovers and limited Marian to just 1-for-5 shooting from the floor.
Lawrence returns to Midwest Conference play on Wednesday when the Vikings host Monmouth College.
Men’s hockey
St. Mary’s University 3, Lawrence 2
WINONA, Minn. — The Lawrence University men’s hockey team dropped a tight 3-2 nonconference decision at Saint Mary’s University on Saturday night.
Jacob Jakusz and Cody Brekke both scored for the Vikings, and Miles McCue and Ethan Beaumont both picked up assists for Lawrence (3-9-2).
Ken Turelli made 41 saves for the Vikings, and A.J. Ruskowski made 27 saves for Saint Mary’s (6-3-1).
Lawrence took the early lead on Brekke’s goal off a pass from McCue at the 10:08 mark of the opening period. The Cardinals tied it quickly on Nathan Solis’ power-play goal just 1:28 later.
The score stayed 1-1 until the third period when Jakusz put the Vikings back on top. He scored off a pass from Beaumont at the 3:11 mark to give Lawrence a 2-1 advantage.
Colin Tushie then tied it on a power-play goal at the 6:50 mark, and a power-play goal from Solis gave Saint Mary’s a 3-2 lead at the 7:39 mark. The Cardinals were 3-for-7 on the power play, and Lawrence was 0-for-2.
Lawrence had a chance to tie it late when Saint Mary’s Warner Young was whistled for charging with 59 seconds left. The Vikings pulled Turelli so Lawrence had a two-man advantage for the final minute.
The Vikings squeezed off three shots in the final minute, but Ruskowski made two saves and the other shot went wide. Saint Mary’s had a 44-29 edge in shots for the game.
