(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) MILWAUKEE – The No. 8/8 Marquette University men’s basketball team defeated Creighton on Friday night, 79-71, in front of a sellout crowd at Fiserv Forum to move to 4-0 in BIG EAST play.
The Golden Eagles (13-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) were led by Kam Jones, who had 22 points (15 in the second half), nine rebounds, five assists and two steals. Stevie Mitchell finished with 18 points (14 in the first half), six rebounds and two assists.
Creighton scored the first seven points of the game before Marquette went on a 10-0 run of their own. The Bluejays had their largest lead of the game with 2 minutes and 55 seconds left in the first half at 35-27, but MU went on a 12-0 run to lead by four at the break.
The Golden Eagles started the second half with 14-3 run to balloon the lead to 15 at the 15-minute mark. Kam Jones and Stevie Mitchell had 16 of Marquette’s 26 points during the 26-3 run.
The Bluejays went on a 15-3 run the next four minutes of play to cut the deficit to three at the under 12 timeout. Marquette held Creighton to just 3-of-13 shooting the last eight minutes of the game. Kam Jones and David Joplin had 15 of Marquette’s last 17 points.
Creighton (9-6, 2-2 BIG EAST) was led by Ryan Kalkbrenner, who had 16 points and 12 rebounds.
NOTABLES:
- Second time in program history Marquette has started 4-0 in BIG EAST play. The squad opened the 2012-13 conference slate 4-0 en route to a 14-4 overall record and a share of the regular season title.
- Ninth time this season MU has had 10-or-less turnovers in a game. The Golden Eagles were third in the nation coming into the game at 8.9 turnovers per game.
- Kam Jones seventh game this season with 12+ points, 5+ assists and 5+ rebounds.
- Steve Mitchell had his fourth-straight game scoring in double-digits.
- Mitchell had his eight game of the season with 3-or-more steals.
- Marquette’s third sellout of the season including the students-only game on Nov. 11 at the Al McGuire Center. Tonight’s attendance of 17,756 is the 10th largest crowd for MU at Fiserv Forum.
