(WTAQ-WLUK) — Months after a fatal OWI crash on the Menominee Indian Reservation, a federal grand jury has charged a man with involuntary manslaughter.
21-year-old Desmond L. Waukau, Jr. — an enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin who resides in the Green Bay area — was indicted with involuntary manslaughter and fleeing an officer resulting in death for the September crash that killed his passenger.
According to officials, Waukau was under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance when he accelerated his vehicle in an attempt to elude police, causing the deadly crash.
If Waukau is convicted of both counts, he faces up to 33 years in prison and $500,000 in fines. The fleeing an officer resulting in death charge carries a 30-month mandatory minimum sentence.
