ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It’s the end of an era and the start of a new chapter for Ashwaubenon Public Safety Chief Brian Uhl.
After three decades of public service, Uhl officially retired Thursday.
“I’ve been through many retirements of good folks. I’ve envied those folks, and now the day is here for me to retire. It’s been a long journey — 30 years since I started,” Uhl said.
Uhl began his law enforcement career in 1994 as a deputy sheriff with the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. Over the years, he also served with the Janesville, Whitewater and Oregon police departments before accepting his current role as chief of Ashwaubenon Public Safety.
During a retirement ceremony Thursday, Uhl reflected on his time with APS and thanked his staff for helping make a difference in the community.
“I hope that the things we’ve done here sets you on a good path. The things that we were able to accomplish, I’m proud of. But it wasn’t me; my leadership style was always about it being a partnership with everyone in the agency,” Uhl said.
We try to make your lives better. That was my goal — to make the department better, to make the community better and to make your lives better. So I want to thank all of you for the unwavering support that you have given me and given us. It’s been a pleasure working with you here.
Uhl also said that in the future, he’s ready to stay put in one place.
“My wife and I were talking the other day and I think that since we met, we’ve moved, during my journey, 11 times in about 29 years. I did the math; that’s a move about every 2.5 years,” Uhl said. “We’re looking to make one final move.”
