MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Matthew Buchholz was sentenced on December 18 to six months in jail for stealing lottery tickets from his employer and not reporting the income on his tax returns.
Buchholz, 42, pleaded no contest to three counts: theft of movable property, income tax fraud, and theft by false representation. Two other counts were dismissed.
Buchholz declined to comment in court.
He was also placed on probation for seven years by Judge Anthony Lambrecht. Buchholz has agreed to pay $35,000 in restitution but a hearing Feb. 24 will determine the final amount.
According to the criminal complaint, Buchholz stole lottery tickets worth between $10,000 and $100,000 from his place of employment and defrauded the Wisconsin Lottery. Buchholz then collected the winnings from the stolen tickets and failed to report any of this income on his income tax returns.
The complaint alleges that Buchholz filed tax returns and understated income by more than $300,500, evading over $20,000 in Wisconsin income tax.
