DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A detective with the De Pere Police Department has resigned amid the department chief’s effort to terminate him.
FOX 11 confirmed Tuesday that Detective Steve Yedica, a 14-year veteran with the De Pere Police Department, submitted his resignation.
It comes less than two weeks after Chief Jeremy Muraski announced he had filed formal charges against Yedica with the City of De Pere Police and Fire Commission following an internal investigation into alleged policy violations.
A copy of the statement of charges contends that Yedica “engaged in seriously deficient job performance” during a fatal drug overdose case he was assigned in August 2021.
Muraski stated that over a 13-month period, Yedica “failed to thoroughly and properly investigate” the incident — a potential homicide case — despite the “presence of several clear, viable and potential leads.”
The statement of charges also claims that Yedica closed the case “without any discussion with his direct supervisor after his continued failures to investigate.”
Yedica also has record of progressive discipline with the Department and has been repeatedly warned about his conduct, the importance of policy and procedure, and the consequences of violating those core responsibilities and duties of a sworn law enforcement officer.
Despite those warnings, Yedica has engaged in seriously deficient job performance as described herein, which warrants Yedica’s removal for the good of the police service because of the seriousness of his deficient job performance and the impact to him and the Department.
The City of De Pere Police and Fire Commission is an independent body which oversees disciplinary matters within the city’s police and fire departments. It was reviewing the charges filed against Yedica by Muraski and would have held a hearing to allow both Yedica and the police department a chance to offer evidence and testimony prior to determining the appropriate course of action.
However, now that Yedica has resigned, that hearing has been canceled.
