JUNEAU, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Emily Borgwardt filed for “annulment/legal separation” Thursday from Ryan Borgwardt — her husband who faked his own drowning so he could leave her and their children and meet a woman in Eastern Europe.
Borgwardt returned to the United States earlier this week and is now facing obstruction charges.
Court records reviewed by FOX 11 list Emily Borgwardt’s address as Lebanon, with his address in Watertown. An April 28 hearing was scheduled.
According to the petition filed in Dodge County, the marriage is “irretrievably broken.” The document doesn’t elaborate.
The separation petition states that the couple has been married for 22 years and Emily Borgwardt wants sole custody of their three teenaged children. The document adds that Emily works at a private school in Watertown. Ryan is listed as self-employed and currently residing at an “unknown address.”
The filing comes one day after Ryan Borgwardt was charged with obstruction for faking of his own death on Green Lake Aug. 11. He fled to the country of Georgia, but according to Sheriff Mark Podoll, returned to the United States on his own accord.
Borgwardt was released on a signature bond. He returns to court Jan. 13.
