(WTAQ-WLUK) — After 20 years out of business, a chain of Mexican restaurants co-founded by a Green Bay Packers legend is coming back.
Chi-Chi’s was founded by Packers player and broadcaster Max McGee, along with restaurateur Marno McDermott, in 1975. According to a news release, McDermott’s son Michael has struck a deal with Hormel Foods, owner of the Chi-Chi’s trademarks, to use the name on restaurants set to open next year.
“I still have fond memories of growing up in the Chi-Chi’s restaurants that my father built throughout their time, instilling in me the passion and determination to pursue my own career in the restaurant industry,” McDermott said in a news release.
“We have seen the impact our restaurant has had on individuals and families across the country and believe there is a strong opportunity to bring the brand back in a way that resonates with today’s consumer — an updated dining experience with the same great taste and Mexican flavor.”
Chi-Chi’s grew to more than 200 locations at its peak. After a series of ownership changes, the chain closed its last 26 locations across seven states — including one in Grand Chute — in 2004.
At the time, the company said the shutdowns were part of its bankruptcy reorganization. Chi-Chi’s filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2003. The next year, it was hit by an an outbreak of hepatitis A at one of its restaurants near Pittsburgh.
The news release does not give any locations for the relaunched brand.
