DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) — De Pere Chief of Police Jeremy Muraski announced Wednesday that formal charges have been filed with the President of the City of De Pere Police and Fire Commission seeking the termination of Detective Sergeant Steve Yedica.
This action follows an internal investigation that concluded Detective Yedica violated several department policies and procedures regarding a fatal drug overdose investigation that he was assigned to on August 22, 2021.
The charging document states that “despite being entrusted to investigate this possible homicide, Yedica closed the case out without any discussion with his direct supervisor after his continued failures to investigate.” Yedica also did not go to the crime scene, speak with witnesses, or collect evidence.
“Our officers are entrusted with great responsibility, and they must adhere to the highest ethical and professional standards,” Chief Muraski stated. “While it may seem difficult to take disciplinary action against one of our own, it is absolutely necessary to ensure the excellence of our department
and to maintain the trust of the community we serve.”
The Police and Fire Commission, an independent body tasked with overseeing disciplinary matters within the police and fire departments, will review the charges and determine the appropriate course of action.
The Commission will schedule a hearing, during which both the Police Department and Detective Yedica will have the opportunity to present evidence and testimony.
“We understand the community’s concern and interest in this matter,” added Chief Muraski. “We will continue to provide updates as this case progresses and will ensure that the process is conducted fairly and impartially.”
Detective Yedica is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation and subsequent proceedings.
