(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team endured a frigid shooting night Tuesday en route to a 66-48 Midwest Conference loss to Beloit College at Flood Arena.
Lawrence shot just 29.8 percent from the floor, including 17.4 percent on 3-pointers, for the game.
Casey Schoenecker led Lawrence with 14 points as he hit 7-of-13 shots from the floor. Schoenecker also pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Landon Key added eight points, four rebounds and four steals for the Vikings (2-5, 0-1 MWC).
Azeez Ganiyu led Beloit (3-3, 1-0) with 20 points.
Lawrence trailed 18-8 early after seven consecutive points by the Bucs. Beloit led by as many as 19 points at 38-19, but the Vikings finished the first half with a flurry. After a pair of Carson Nichols free throws, Nathan Valentine drained a 3-pointer and Schoenecker got a layup at the buzzer to trim the lead to 38-26 at the break.
Lawrence cut the lead to eight points four times in the second half, the last coming after Valentine’s layup with 9:12 left to make the score 51-43. Beloit then went on a 13-2 run to seal the victory.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings host Grinnell College at Alexander Gymnasium.
Women’s basketball
LAWRENCE 59, BELOIT 35
BELOIT, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s basketball team used a stifling defense Tuesday to roll to a 59-35 Midwest Conference victory over Beloit College at Flood Arena.
Lawrence limited Beloit to just 21.3 percent shooting for the game, and that included 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Vikings forced 22 Beloit turnovers. The 35 points is the fewest scored by a Lawrence opponent since the Vikings defeated Grinnell College 86-33 back on Jan. 12, 2002.
Olivia Kesti came off the bench to lead the Vikings (4-2, 1-0 MWC) with 13 points. Kesti, who also had six rebounds, went 4-for-6 from the floor, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
Lawrence’s Sophie Morey added 11 points as she went 5-for-6 from the floor. Morey also had three rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks. Mallory Meyer had eight points and three rebounds for the Vikings, and Maggie Culver added five points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Lydia Lueck chipped in with seven points and four rebounds for the Vikings, and Charlotte Brennan had six points, five rebounds and three assists.
Johanna McNair and Hailey Johnson had 10 points apiece to lead Beloit (0-8, 0-1). McNair and Johnson were a combined 7-for-15 from the floor, but the rest of the Bucs were just 3-for-32.
The Vikings jumped on the Bucs from the opening tip as Lawrence led 7-1 to start and pushed the advantage 16-6 after the first quarter. Tanner Bost hit a 3-pointer to start the second quarter for the Vikings, and Lawrence led by as many as 17 points in the first half.
The Vikings were up 33-16 at the half, and Meyer’s layup and a Culver 3-pointer, sandwiched around a Beloit basket, gave Lawrence a 38-18 edge early in the third quarter. Lawrence led by as many as 27 at 49-22 in the third quarter.
Lawrence returns to action on Saturday when the Vikings host Grinnell at Alexander Gymnasium.
