(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) SUPERIOR, Wis. — Miles McCue shootout goal lifted the Lawrence University men’s hockey team to third place in the Superior Showdown at Siinto Wessman Arena.
Lawrence skated to a 1-1 tie with the University of Dubuque, but the Vikings took the shootout 1-0 on McCue’s goal and some stout goaltending by Nolan Mahaffey.
The Vikings (3-6-2) led early when Jacob Jakusz scored for the Vikings at the 4:17 mark of the second period. Akhmed Malsagov and Dylan Marty picked up assists on Jakusz’s goal.
Lawrence was hanging onto that slim advantage when Carter Cloutier was whistled for high sticking with 2:35 remaining in the third period. The Spartans (0-8-2) went on the power play and later pulled goaltender Ryan Piros. With six attackers on the ice for Dubuque and just four Lawrence defenders, the Spartans’ Owen Hardy scored just 10 seconds left on the power play to tie the game at 1-1.
The contest went to the 3-on-3 overtime and both teams had quality scoring chances. Mahaffey came up big several times and picked up four saves in the overtime. Hayden Johnson nearly won it for the Vikings late in the overtime, but the game advanced to a shootout.
After Mahaffey stopped Cooper Fink in the opening round of the shootout, McCue went top shelf against Piros on Lawrence’s first attempt to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. That was all Mahaffey needed as he stopped Nikita Borodayenko and Hardy on Dubuque’s next two attempts to secure the shootout win.
Mahaffey finished with 28 saves for the Vikings, and Piros had 20 saves for Dubuque.
