MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is encouraging you to harvest your Christmas tree in a state forest this year. Division of Forestry Property Manager Beth Feind says there’s plenty of places to get your tree from.
“They can go to the Brule River, Flambeau River, Governor Earl Peshtigo River, Governor Knowles and Northern Highland-American Legion state forests.”
Feind says make sure you get a permit first.
“You can go to one of the State Forest headquarters, or sometimes some entrance stations sell the permit, depending on the property. Permits are about $5 a tree for a balsam and fir. A lot of the times, the max footage that you can cut down is 30 feet.”
A full list of what forests you can cut down trees in can be found on the DNR’s website.
