(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) NEW ULM, Minn. — The Lawrence University men’s basketball team pulled away in the final minutes Saturday and posted an 83-79 nonconference victory over Martin Luther College at the Luther Student Center.
Nathan Valentine poured in 24 points for the Vikings, and Casey Schoenecker added 20 to lead four Vikings in double figures. Valentine went 7-for-11 from the floor, including 4-for-7 from 3-point range, and added four assists and four rebounds. Schoenecker was 10-for-15 from the floor and picked up three rebounds, a block and a steal.
Landon Key collected 12 points and five rebounds, and Caleb Nash had 10 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Vikings (2-4).
The game was tight into the second half when Lawrence scored six consecutive points, four from Valentine and two from Nolan Koch, to grab a 60-46 lead. The Knights reeled the Vikings back in and cut the lead to one at 68-67 with 6:08 remaining.
Lawrence was up 73-72 when Schoenecker got a dunk off a feed from Valentine to spark the Vikings. After a Martin Luther miss, Valentine converted a pair of free throws with 2:40 remaining for a 77-72 lead. The teams traded missed shots, but Nicholas Gouriotis followed with a layup to push Lawrence’s lead to 79-72 with 1:17 left.
The teams traded free throws, and the Vikings led 81-74 with 41 ticks remaining. Martin Luther missed a pair of shots but got two offensive rebounds, and Benjamin Vasold hit a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left to trim the lead to 81-77.
Gouriotis then hit one free throw, but Martin Luther got a tip-in with 10 seconds left to cut the lead to 82-79. The Knights fouled Valentine with six seconds left, and he made one foul shot to seal the win.
Ethan Kjenstad paced Martin Luther (2-3) with 24 points.
Women’s basketball
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University women’s basketball team started strong Friday and went on to a 79-58 nonconference victory over Rockford University at Alexander Gymnasium.
The Vikings built a 12-point lead after the opening quarter and then pulled away in the third quarter.
Maggie Culver and Charlotte Brennan scored 15 points apiece to lead the Lawrence attack. Culver went 5-for-6 from the floor, including 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line. Culver added six rebounds and a pair of assists. Brennan was 5-for-7 from the floor and went 2-for-3 on 3-pointers. Brennan had a game-high five assists and picked up a pair of steals.
Lawrence’s Mallory Meyer added 14 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the floor, and Josie Chose came off the bench to score 10 points. Chose went 3-for-4 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the foul line.
Lawrence (3-2) jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game, and Sophie Morey’s layup gave the Vikings a 13-point edge at 19-6. Culver’s layup in the final second of the first quarter gave Lawrence a 23-11 lead heading to the second quarter.
The Vikings went on a 10-0 run, capped by a Brennan layup, early in the second quarter to push the lead to 33-14. Rockford rallied to trim the lead to 39-30, but Culver finished the half with a three-point play for a 42-30 lead at the break.
Brennan then sparked a 9-2 scoring run early in the third quarter as she scored six of those points to help the Vikings to a 51-32 advantage. Lawrence would go on to lead by as many as 23 points, and Rockford (1-3) never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
Lawrence forced 21 Rockford turnovers, and the Vikings picked up 13 steals.
Jocelyn Callahan paced the Regents with 14 points.
Men’s hockey
APPLETON, Wis. — The Lawrence University men’s hockey team lost a gut-wrenching 3-2 overtime game to No. 7 Adrian College on Saturday at the Appleton Ice Center.
Adrian pulled out the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory with a goal from Bradley Somers with just 20 seconds left in overtime.
Lawrence had been on the power play in the five-minute overtime after Ian Amsbaugh was whistled for hooking. The Vikings had multiple quality scoring chances on the power play but Evan Izenstark was then called for interference with just 1:35 left to put the Bulldogs on the power play.
The Vikings looked like they were going to force a shootout when Somers got his shot just over the shoulder of Lawrence goaltender Nolan Mahaffey to end the contest with just 20 ticks left.
Lawrence (3-4-1, 2-3-1 NCHA) grabbed the lead early in the second period when Alex Hollands scored off an assist from Miles McCue at the 1:42 mark. The Vikings doubled that lead when Adam Brzezicki scored off assists from Jack Michels and Will Crull at the 10:30 mark.
Adrian cut the lead to 2-1 on Austin McCarthy’s goal at the 14:15 mark of the second and then tied it on Ben Loreto’s goal at the 1:47 mark of the third.
Mahaffey finished with 29 saves for the Vikings, and Dershahn Stewart had 32 saves for Adrian (5-3-0, 2-2-0).
Women’s hockey
ADRIAN, Mich. — The Lawrence University women’s hockey team scored in the opening minute Saturday, but it all Adrian College after that in a 12-1 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association win by the Bulldogs at Arrington Arena.
Fifth-ranked Adrian and Lawrence both scored in the first 57 seconds of the game, but Adrian went on lead 4-1 after the first period. The Bulldogs then scored six times in the second and tacked on two more goals in the third for the final margin. Courtney Ben posted a hat trick for Adrian (7-1-0, 6-0-0).
Meg Landman scored her first goal for the Vikings (1-6-1, 1-4-1) when she tied the game at 1-1 just 57 seconds into the contest.
Ella Sciborski started in goal for the Vikings and made 29 saves through the first 31:01. Sydney Seeley came on in relief and stopped 23 shots over the remainder of the contest.
