(WNFL) – Christian Collins rushed for 408 yards and 5 touchdowns on 39 carries to lead the Notre Dame Tritons to a 49-28 win over Catholic Memorial in the WIAA Division 3 state championship on Friday.
Collins scored on running plays that covered 25, 41, 65, 73 and 7 yards.
Collins broke the previous championship game record for all divisions set the Kimberly’s Blair Mulholland (341) yards in 2015.
The 77 points scored by the 2 teams also broke the Division 3 record for most points scored (75) by 2 teams set by Notre Dame and Wisconsin Lutheran in 2003. (Notre Dame won 48-27).
Tied 7-7, Notre Dame took the lead on an 8-yard run by Jack Collins with less than 3 minutes left in the first quarter.
C Kiefert then made it 21-7 for the Tritons with a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Catholic Memorial came back with a pair of touchdowns to tie the game 21-21 before Christian Collins ripped off a 41-yard touchdown run with just over 2 minutes left in the half to put the Tritons ahead for good.
Notre Dame finished with 459 yards of offense (23 yards passing) while Catholic Memorial had 346 yards of offense with 309 coming through the air.
The title is Notre Dame’s first since 2015 when they defeated Catholic Memorial.
