HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The cost of Thanksgiving is going up this year, for those planning to host a holiday feast. But shopping around and utilizing coupons can help to keep those food costs down.
The Thanksgiving holiday is something grocery stores plan for months ahead of time.
Thanksgiving to cost more, while Green Bay area grocers stocked for shoppers
“I mean, as far as how, getting our products in, we get everything in, our warehouse is enormous. We try to get all of our stuff in ahead of time to make sure that we’ve got the quantity and the selection for all the customers as the day gets closer,” said Kevin Rades, an HR Specialist with Woodman’s in Howard.
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, grocery stores like Woodman’s in Howard are all stocked up with Thanksgiving Day essentials, like turkeys.
They encourage everyone to shop early.
“Don’t wait until the end. It’s only going to get busier each day leading up to Thanksgiving. Avoid a little bit of the stress, buy your stuff early,” said Rades.
A Thanksgiving study by Lending Tree, shows Thanksgiving hosts plan to spend an average of $431 on food, drinks, and decorations this year — which is up 19% from last year.
Shoppers, like Carly Van Ess, were out 11 days before Thanksgiving making sure they were prepared for hosting a Thanksgiving gathering.
“Trying to get a head start on, you know, buying the turkey and a bunch of the sides,” said Van Ess. “They have good deals here on their coupon ad so, just took a look at that and just saw what I could grab for the holidays.”
A big issue for shoppers is inflation.
Lending Tree’s study finds three in five people say inflation is impacting their Thanksgiving, costing roughly 27-percent of shoppers to change their food choices.
Some like Mike Wenzel haven’t quite done their thanksgiving shopping yet, but are worried what it could mean for their wallet.
“We’ll definitely have to shop around to be honest. You know, kind of find who’s having the best prices,” said Wenzel from Town of Pensaukee.
Even though shoppers are encouraged to get their Thanksgiving day items as early as possible, stores are prepared for the expected rush that’s likely to come in the days leading up to the holiday.
