(LAWRENCE ATHLETICS) LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Lawrence University men’s hockey team rallied in the third period Friday to grab a 4-4 tie at Lake Forest College and then won the shootout.
After a scoreless overtime, Lawrence took the shootout 2-1 with goals from Ethan Beaumont and Carter Cloutier.
Lawrence (2-2-1, 1-1-1 NCHA) trailed 3-0 after the opening period, but came back strong in the second.
Tiziano Pauchard scored 6:57 into the second off a pass from Miles McCue to trim the lead to 3-1. Cory Checco then scored his first goal of the season off assists from Cloutier and Jack Michels to trim the margin to 3-2 at the 11:38 mark. Pauchard scored again, this time off assists from Adam Brzezicki and Josh Danis, to tie the game at 3-3 at the 14:36 mark.
Lake Forest (1-3-1, 0-2-1) grabbed the lead back on Trevor Faucher’s goal at 10:06 of the third, but that lead didn’t last long. Will Crull scored his first goal of the season off assists from Luke Robertson and Evan Izenstark to tie the game at 4-4 at 12:37.
The game went to overtime and each team managed two shots on goal but neither squad was able to score.
The five-round shootout was next and neither team scored in the first two rounds. Beaumont then scored in the third round for the Vikings, but Cashe Freiermuth answered for Lake Forest. After both teams failed to score in the fourth round, Cloutier scored for the Vikings in the final round. When Lawrence goaltender Nolan Mahaffey stopped Hardy Wagner in the final round, the Vikings clinched the shootout win.
Mahaffey finished with 22 saves, and Dylan Kruss stopped 32 shots for the Foresters. Lawrence had a 36-26 edge in shots for the game.
The teams wrap up the two-game series in Appleton on Saturday night.
Women’s hockey
Lake Forest 3, Lawrence 0
APPLETON, WIs. — The Lawrence University women’s hockey team couldn’t get its offense cranked up on Friday and dropped a 3-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association decision to Lake Forest College at the Champion Center.
The Foresters scored once in each period and limited Lawrence to just 18 shots.
Lake Forest (2-2-1, 1-1-1 NCHA) broke a scoreless tie on Macy Gehrke’s power-play goal at the 8:50 mark of the first. Lake Forest was 1-for-3 on the power play and Lawrence was 0-for-3.
Lily Anderson made it 2-0 at the 9:21 mark of the second, and the Foresters added an empty net goal from Jasmine Kohl with 2:11 remaining in the game.
Angie Lombardi recorded 18 saves for the shutout, and Ella Sciborski stopped 25 shots for the Vikings (1-4-0, 1-2-0).
The teams wrap up the series on Saturday at Lake Forest.
