(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) The No. 15/15 Marquette University men’s basketball team (4-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) opened the road portion of its 2024-25 campaign with a 78-74 win at Maryland (3-1, 0-0 Big Ten) on Friday night in the XFINITY Center.
Senior guard Kam Jones scored 28 points and classmate Stevie Mitchell finished with 18 points, including some clutch free throws down the stretch.
Marquette led by eight points with a minute left, but Maryland closed the gap to two points with 14.7 seconds left and were at the free throw line shooting two charity tosses.
The Golden Eagles trailed just 34-30 at the intermission, despite the Terps shooting 57.7 percent from the floor. Marquette, meanwhile, made just 37.9 percent of its chances from the field and missed a number of shots at the rim. Jones led the way offensively with 10 points.
Notables:
- Freshman Damarius Owens, who missed the first three games of the season with a foot injury, made his collegiate debut Friday night and netted his first career points
- Kam Jones finished with 28 points, moving into 18th-place all-time at MU with 1,487 points
- Freshman Royce Parham finished with a career-high 10 points
