(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) CHICAGO – A comeback to remember! The Green Bay women’s basketball team charted it’s first win of the 2024-25 campaign with a thrilling 74-71 victory over the UIC Flames Wednesday night. It marked Green Bay’s 29th consecutive victory over UIC, and was the first win for Kayla Karius as head coach at Green Bay.
Maddy Schreiber was sensational for the Phoenix, racking up 25 points, which tied for most among all players with UIC’s Makiyah Williams. Natalie McNeal tallied 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while Jenna Guyer
scored 11 off the bench. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz tacked on another 10 points.
Green Bay moved to 1-2 overall with the victory, while UIC dropped to 0-2 to begin their season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix jumped out to an 8-0 lead, getting contributions from McNeal, Schreiber, and Kondrakiewicz. UIC answered right back with a 13-2 run, culminating in a triple from Danyel Middleton. GB went cold over the middle portion of the opening frame but finished strong going into the second quarter, getting a three-pointer from Callie Genke and Schreiber. Ky Dempsey-Toney scored five points down the stretch, helping the Flames carry a 26-18 lead into quarter number two. Green Bay traded buckets with UIC in the quarter, eventually tying the contest at 29 apiece after Schreiber finished a layup. The Flames pulled away for a few minutes, taking a 43-32 advantage after a pair of Williams free throws. Guyer got in on the action by drilling a three right before the halftime buzzer, with Green Bay trailing 43-37 at the break.
GB kept UIC within arm’s length during the third period, with the Flames leading by seven at the end of the quarter after a Sara Zabrecky three. Zabrecky extended UIC’s lead to 10 in the fourth quarter with another trey, making it 66-56 with 6:23 to go. Neither team scored for nearly three and a half minutes, but Schreiber broke through with a three to cut the deficit to seven with 3:03 remaining in the period. Schreiber knocked down another three on the ensuing offensive possession, making it a four-point game with 2:26 to go. Guyer followed with an emphatic and-one, pulling the Phoenix to within one with 1:45 remaining. GB continued what ended up being a 15-0 run, getting an and-one from McNeal and a mid-range jumper from Schreiber, taking a four-point lead with 30 second left on the clock. McNeal, Guyer, and Bailey Butler got the job done at the charity stripe down the stretch, helping Green Bay to a 74-41 win, the team’s first of the season.
