GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new project in Green Bay is breaking ground and barriers for families struggling to get into the housing market.
NeighborWorks Green Bay announced Wednesday it would be building seven affordable homes in the city’s west side Tank neighborhood.
Five units will be built on a vacant lot along S. Chestnut Avenue and two units will be fronting on 4th Street.
President and CEO of NeighborWorks Green Bay, Novel Halvorsen, says the the goal is to price the homes as much as$100,000 or more less than the typical new home construction price in town.
“For us it’s just looking at the cost of new homes right now. It’s just not attainable for the majority of our families in our community and so by trying to keep our costs low and bring these projects in at a lower price,” Halvorsen said. “It makes new homes affordable for many more people than what otherwise would be to able to compete in the market and we also just need more homes in the Green Bay area and throughout the region and state, country, there’s just a shortage of housing and so adding seven units to the mix is a good thing and we’re excited to have those homes for families looking to buy their first home.”
Construction will start soon and all units are expected to be complete and sold sometime in 2025.
