(UW ATHLETICS) ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Four goals from four different Badgers and a shutout from sophomore Ava McNaughton helped the No. 1 Wisconsin women’s hockey team to a 4-0 win over the No. 8 St. Cloud State Huskies Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Laila Edwards scored for the Badgers (12-0-0, 8-0-0 WCHA) after posting two goals on Friday against the Huskies (7-3-2, 3-3-2 WCHA). Freshman Maggie Scannell added her fifth of the season. Alternate Captain Lacey Eden scored on the power play and Kirsten Simms notched an empty-net goal. Co-captain Caroline Harvey put together her second-straight multi-point game.
Wisconsin scored first four minutes into the contest. Blueliner Laney Potter took a shot from the point that Edwards tipped past St. Cloud netminder Emilia Kyrkkö to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Scannell doubled the Badgers lead with 40 seconds left in the first period. Harvey sent a powerful shot on the Huskies’ net that Kyrkkö saved but couldn’t handle the rebound which Scanell slotted into the back of the net. Wisconsin took their 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Badgers stood tall defensively in the second period. UW was whistled for a five-minute major and the PK unit killed off four minutes of the penalty before another Badger was sent to the box. St. Cloud State pulled its goalie to give them a 6-on-3 skater advantage. The Badgers killed off 59 seconds of the 6-on-3 and the remaining Huskies’ power play, after which Kyrkkö returned into the net for the Huskies.
Wisconsin got a chance of its own on the power play in the second period and capitalized. Harvey sent a shot from the point that Eden tipped from right in front of the crease and into the net. The Badgers maintained their 3-0 lead for the rest of the second period.
At the end of the third frame, St. Cloud State pulled its goaltender with two minutes remaining for the extra attacker, and Simms closed out the scoring as she shot it into the empty net.
McNaughton stopped all 29 shots she faced for her fifth and second-straight shutout of the year.
