(SNC COMMUNICATIONS) LISLE, Ill. – St. Norbert College rallied to a big 3-1 win over Benedictine University in a key Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference match at Rice Center.
St. Norbert topped the Eagles 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 26-24 to claim a hard-fought win.
The Green Knights (18-12, 10-1 NACC) can clinch at least a share of the NACC regular-season championship when it hosts Concordia University Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Mulva Family Fitness & Sports Center. St. Norbert is tied in the NACC standings with Edgewood College with one match remaining.
St. Norbert fell behind in the first set and never led getting to within 20-19 and 22-21 before Benedictine took a 1-0 lead. The second set featured 14 ties, the last coming at 20-20. The Green Knights rattled off three consecutive points on a kill by Mari Szews and two from Heidi Colburn for a 23-20 lead. Anna Kudick’s kill even the match at 1-1.
The Eagles took an 8-3 lead in Set 3 before the Green Knights stormed back to take a 16-11 lead, capping an overall 10-1 run. Casey Vaughan’s two kills helped St. Norbert pull away down the stretch and take a 2-1 lead. The fourth set was also closely battled, with 12 ties and five lead changes. Benedictine led 21-20 before the Green Knights went on a 4-1 run for a 24-22 lead. The Eagles forced a deuce set at 24-24, but two kills by Vaughan wrapped up the win for St. Norbert.
St. Norbert hit .217, with 64 kills in 25 attempts in 180 swings. Alyssa Mills had 19 kills, while Vaughan had 15 kills and Kudick 11 kills. Colburn had 51 assists, while Lauren Borchardt and Andrianna Volz had two service aces apiece.
Colburn had 20 digs, and flirted with a triple double with her seven kills. Kara Sowinski had 15 digs, while Borchardt and Volz had 14 apiece. Szews had four blocks.
Benedictine hit .176, with 49 kills and 20 errors in 165 attempts. Olivia McPherson had 16 kills to lead the Eagles.
