(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) – MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men’s soccer team (6-7-4, 2-4-2 BIG EAST) fell 5-2 to Creighton (9-5-3, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) Saturday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Creighton began the match with constant pressure on MU backline which resulted in an 11th minute goal by Creighton when a CU forward tackled the ball away from MU within the box and found the back of the net immediately to take a 1-0 advantage.
In the 19th minute, Creighton snuck behind MU’s backline and scored for its second time in the match.
At halftime, Marquette had 4 shots, 1 of which was shot on goal.
Early into the second half Creighton found the back in the 49th minute. The goal gave the Bluejays a 3-0 advantage.
Continuing to keep the pressure on, Creighton scored in the 52nd minute to take a 4-0 lead with just under 40 minutes left in the match.
In the 60th minute, Grant Locker scored Marquette’s first goal of the game (third goal of the season). The goal was assisted by Tim Smith to cut into the lead, 4-1.
In the 75th minute Smith committed a foul in the box, but Marten Brink saved the PK not allowing a Creighton goal.
Marquette’s Gabe Anguil scored in the 81st minute, coming off of Mitchell Dryden and Antonio Costabile assists to make the score 4-2.
The final goal of the match came from Creighton in the 81st minute to notch the Bluejays’ fifth goal.
Marquette finished the match with 18 shots to Creighton’s 13.
With Marquette’s loss, the Golden Eagles season came to an end. The Blue and Gold needed a win or tie to qualify for a BIG EAST postseason spot.
