GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With November right around the corner, the Green Bay Packers and Fleet Farm launched their annual “Salute to Service” initiative Tuesday at Lambeau Field.
The league-wide program is celebrated each November in conjunction with Veterans Day. Its purpose is to honor veterans and military members through special events, fundraising, discounts and gameday involvement.
Packers defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness is this year’s Salute to Service spokesperson. He is also the team’s nominee for this year’s NFL’s Salute to Service Award.
“My grandpa, Donald Van Ness, served for 27 years as a lieutenant colonel. I’ve always believed playing this amazing sport of football, I wouldn’t be here today without these freedoms and the work that these veterans and those who continue to serve have put in,” Van Ness said. “It’s just an incredible honor to be here today to show my appreciation.”
They go out there and they protect us, they gave us these freedoms and they made the ultimate sacrifice. I encourage you to show your patriotism by going out and supporting them.
One way you can support the Packers’ Salute to Service initiative is by rounding up your purchase at any Wisconsin Fleet Farm locations from Nov. 1-20to benefit H.O.O.A.H. WI. It’s a nonprofit that aims to eliminate suicide by addressing the wellness of service members, veterans and their support systems. The Packers will match up to $10,000 of these donations.
The Packers’ annual Salute to Service game will be held Nov. 24 against the San Francisco 49ers. Players will wear and use special equipment that features the NFL Salute to Service camo-ribbon decal. Lambeau Field will feature Salute to Service goal post wraps and pylon decals, and in-game videos will include shout outs to service members and veterans. Fans attending the game will receive a Salute to Service camo rally towel.
Last month, the Packers held daily events during their Military Appreciation Week to honor those who have served.
Special discounts and promotions for veterans and military members during Salute to Service include:
Free Packers Hall of Fame admission with their military ID on Veterans Day
Members of the military and veterans eating at 1919 Kitchen & Tap can receive a 25% discount on food and non-alcoholic beverages throughout November
The Packers Pro Shop is offering all active military members and veterans 20% off on Veterans Day. The NFL will donate any profits to benefit its military non-profit partners.
Fleet Farm also is honoring all veterans and active military members by offering an extra 10% off their in-store purchases from Nov. 7 through Nov. 11.
